Burlesque Beauties Night with Anja Keister!

On Saturday, February 11, join UnderWired and New York-based burlesque performer Anja Keister for an afternoon of burlesque basics instruction, makeup tips, and a make-your-own-pasties class!!!!!!! Burlesque Basics class is $15, and the pasties-crafting class is $25 (it includes all your supplies). To register, choose the class or classes you wish to take and click the PayPal button on the right of your screen. It's that simple! Space is limited, so don't wait! Burlesque Basics begins at 3:00, and Pasties Class begins at 4:15.

The day will include light refreshments and great company. You will adore Anja and her vibrant personality and hot-hot-hot burlesque!

Pin-Up Posing and Burlesque Body - Learn some simple secrets on how to look more flattering in photos while channeling your favorite pin-up ladies. The class will then conclude with some easy to learn burlesque moves, including the glove peel, bump & grind, and showgirl stances. Please come dressed in heels (preferred) and clothing you feel comfortable moving in.

Pastie-Making - Learn to make pasties (AKA Burlesque nipple covers) in this workshop that will demonstrate various ways to construct and decorate these sexy accessories. Walk away at the end of this class with your own pair, as well as instructions on a few ways to twirl those tassels! Supply costs included in class price.

Don't Call My Clothes Old

Well, you can if you want. My wardrobe is full of some pretty old stuff. Someone once said to me "You know, for someone who always wears vintage, you look so stylish. You don't look like you took your clothing out of the garbage or anything." Well, thanks, I appreciate that. Ya know, it's a little known fact that my clothing does not come out of the garbage. Ha!

Anyway, the point of this post is to give a little tutorial on getting grease and oil stains out of your garments, not to talk about my garbage - although, I'll pay you $20 a week if you take out the garbage for me.

So! you accidentally poured almond butter oil all over your favorite wool skirt, and by you, I mean me. What to do?! Have no fear. Grab the nearest absorbent cloth and soak up what you can. Then attack the spot(s) on the skirt with a rag soaked with water and dish soap. Do your best to rinse the spot with clear water once the spot has been treated, and - VOILA! All clean again! Dish soap works wonders when lifting stains from vintage garments.

And so goes your lesson for today. Stop throwing crap on yourself. But if you don't stop, now you know how to clean yourself.

The Roaring 20s!

On Friday, October 14th from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., UnderWired Vintage Boutique, Sew On & So Forth, and Lux the Eco-Friendly Salon will host a roaring 20s style party inspired by the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. The party, which has been named "Broad Street Empire," will take place at Sew On & So Forth at 91 E. Broad Street in Bethlehem and will include retro cocktails, desserts, games, prizes, and discounts on featured apparel.

Sew On and So Forth and UnderWired have been sharing space at 91 E. Broad and cooperating with each other in order to bring something special to their individual businesses. Deborah Berkner, owner of Sew On & So Forth, is a costume and clothing designer in her own right, and she offers tailoring and some custom work at her shop. Lisa O'Brien has added UnderWired's vintage wares to the shop, and together, they are working on contributing some interesting and fun events to their side of town. Both women share a passion for design, clothing, and a commitment to responsible consumption through the reuse of materials. Lux Salon, owned by Stephanie Faerber is participating in the planning of Broad Street Empire and offering 1920s hair styling and makeup for the staff and shop owners on the evening of the 14th. House cleaning tip: when faced with a pile of dishes in the sink, make that dismal chore breeze by, by trying on fancy vintage aprons instead. If you ignore the dishes long enough, eventually bugs will find them and eat them. Problem solved.

But here's a bonus:

Trouble getting blood stains out of your favorite vintage angora sweater? Stop getting in knife fights! This tried and true method will have you skipping around town in sparkling clean finery in no time.

I keep neglecting this blog. Naughty.

I wanted to be at Manhattan Vintage this weekend, but the ding-dang ice prevented travel. Emily Caretti of Tea Street Vintage has a booth there, and UnderWired has a glamorous piece for sale there as well. It's a 1940s floor length, black velvet, silk lined coat with white rabbit fur trim and peplum. It is about as glamorous as it gets. It looks like it would have belonged to Rita Hayworth, if Rita Hayworth had been a vampire.

UnderWired has a few new pieces to keep your interest, though. I have attached pictures, for your drooling pleasure. Come and see for yourself at Sew On & So Forth!

Workplace Hair - A Vintage Lover's Guide (or not)

Today's post is about hair. Why? Because I was too cold to keep wearing my work clothing, and changed immediately upon arriving home. So you get hair pictures today.

I do have some words of "wisdom" about workplace hair. Fancy or plain, "up-do" or hanging free, hair should be kept somewhat under control if you work in an office environment. A friend of mine, who I used to work for, loves to tell the story of how we first met and he learned I would be his assistant. We were at an event, and someone introduced us. According to him, I was wearing a skirt suit and had a nice, well-groomed bun in my hair. We chatted, and I said "I'll see you at work tomorrow." Then (according to him, but I can verify this), he came up to me at work the next day and introduced himself. I said "It's me. Lisa. Your assistant. We've met."

David later explained that the reason he didn't recognize me was that, in contrast to the previous evening, my hair was down, and in his words "huge...a hot mess" and because it was "casual Friday" and i was wearing cuffed jeans and a t-shirt, some tattoos were showing, or as David put it, "hanging out all over the place." David loves to remind me of what a horrible sight I was that day. I still think I'm awesome all the time, but whatever. The point is that professional environments normally call for somewhat professional appearances. So be neat 'n tidy. Or not! It's up to you. Maybe you can be messy and have your own boss-turned-buddy friendship story to tell one day!

Fishnets at Work - to wear or not to wear?

Q: I wore fishnets to the office today. Was that ok?

A: Well, that depends. Wait a minute, who is this question from?

Answer: It's me...you know...Lisa. You.

So anyway, I wore fishnets to the office today. I felt that it was appropriate for two reasons. First, my work environment allows for some creativity. Second, my skirt is long and made of heavy wool, which helps to tone down the appearance of fishnet stockings. The skirt hits below mid-calf when I'm standing (vintage, of course!). I also wore low-key shoes and a plain black cardigan. I definitely do NOT suggest wearing fishnets to work if your skirt or dress is short and/or of thin or silky material. And another rule: No cleavage on the job. It's unprofessional and just weird. People will think you're weird. I have seen this in the workplace before, and I was like this inside my brain : "Really? Nice boobs. Just kidding, get those things out of here."

That's today's lesson!

Today, I am excited to be wearing a romantic and lovely locket by Nichole Windsor of Polka Dot Pendant.

I purchased this handmade treasure from Alex (shop owner) at Hello Bluebird (one of the world's most adorable boutiques) in West Reading, PA . Check out Hello Bluebird's Facebook page HERE, and learn about their daily December specials for all you tasteful holiday shoppers!

This locket is one of my new favorite pieces of jewelry. I have begun collecting lockets. Soon, I will have enough to hold pictures of all my cats, my husband, and Alexander Skarsgard. And the squirrel that yells at me in the morning when I leave for work.

Hi there,

The pics in this post do not do this dress justice, so rest assured, it will be in another post very soon. This is another exciting find from Tea Street Vintage in West Reading, PA. It is a beautiful grayish-purple wool piece with pockets and satin buttons. I added my favorite cinch belt because the waistline is ever-so-slightly too big for me (but I can now have my dress altered with EASE at Sew on and Sew Forth, right? Right!), and I also added a vintage crochet collar. The dress has an adorable collar of its own, but I chose to tie my crochet collar high on my neck in place of a necklace today.

Of course, there is no doubt that this dress brings to mind Mad Men and Don Draper. And me cooking dinner for Don and leading the way through the shadows with my reflective, pasty skin, into a dark room where we will dine on rats. What? Why, did you say something?

I went on a mini shopping spree for myself in these two shops, who share a gorgeous space, because their inventory is FABULOUS. Hello Bluebird sells wonderful one-of-a-kind handmade items, and Tea Street Vintage is a vintage collector's dream come true.

Reasons I make a bad secretary:

Now back to me. Sheer white stockings with a cutie print (see detail pic), and a filmy pink scarf, which belonged to my grandmother. And big clip-on earrings. AND NUCKY-ISH SHOES. Heart heart heart.

Mrs. Nucky Thompson - and a Workplace Guide to Vintage Fashion!

Hello!

It's been a while, I know! As some of you already know, I have closed UnderWired Boutique in South Side Bethlehem. But fear not! Great vintage clothing from UnderWired is now available at Sew on and So Forth, on 91 E. Broad Street in Bethlehem! Visit Deborah Berkner there for custom fittings and alterations, and...VINTAGE CLOTHING! We are adding an UnderWired sign later this week, so that you can find us more easily. I am in the shop most Thursday evenings, so come see me!

Now...I have a part-time job, in addition to selling vintage and doing some other creative things. What is a vintage fanatic to do when faced with an office job? Well, I really love my job, so I like to get dressed up to show it how much I love it every morning. "Good morning, job, I LOVE YOU!" The key to wearing vintage in the office is to mix vintage items with simple, modern pieces. I have gone a little overboard with my vintage outfits on a couple of occasions at work (I will tell you about Ghostly 19th Century Old Lady Outfit Day some time), but I have since found a nice balance.

I also still get obsessed with/inspired by TV shows and then dress accordingly. Today's outfit is a love letter to Steve Steve Buscemi's character Nucky Thompson on HBO's series, Boardwalk Empire. If you haven't seen this beautiful show, set during prohibition, you MUST. Note how Nucky is all "why wouldn't you?" in this picture:

So here it is...Asian print dress over pin-striped pants, black crocheted shrug which fits just over the arms, vintage scarf, and soft, loose hair. Voila! No one even noticed that I'm an unprofessional goofball at work, because I looked awesome.

I have some exciting news for you today. First, I'd like to make it known that there are some cute new items in the shop, including adorable "Cosmic Things" accessories! Atomic Bettie makes beautiful felt bow tie pins and floral hair accessories, and they are now available here in the shop! Pin the bows to your collar like a tie, attach them to your belt, or pin them into your hair...these bows make everything better. Even my mannequin got better with the help of a Cosmic Things bow:

My other surprise is this: local design company Post Sputnik will film three live webisodes with me here in the shop, beginning this September! Each program will feature a variety of topics, but I'll fill you in on the details later...I like to keep you guessing!

Hi! I don't know why I'm posting this picture. It was just fun to make, and I think it's kind of stupid, so I wanted to share. The picture is full of intense symbolism. It represents Bill Nye's blog post about that fact that it has literally been hot enough lately to fry an egg on the sidewalk (click HERE), it shows a little bit of what the inside of my brain looks like when I'm uncomfortably warm, and also, the mysterious smiley face in my thought bubble represents how I'm really feeling. I should be an art history teacher. I'm amazing at this. Actually, this is just a picture of me in my secret underground castle, which looks remarkably similar to my store. GIANT BUGS ATTACK (Solicitors)!

Wow, I had the best day yesterday. At the end of the day, I helped Professor Gary DeLeo of Lehigh University with a Q&A session before the screening of Planet 51 (made possible by Movies Games and More) in Bethlehem. Smart questions from smart kids made the night awesome.

But before that happened, I had an amazing day in the store. Because of giant bugs. A giant wasp taught a solicitor a lesson and strengthened my appreciation for nature. Please sit back and read the tale and see the fantastical photos:

As you know, I often complain about solicitors who rudely ignore my very blatant sign and come into the shop to sell me things. I get especially annoyed when said solicitors are full of snooty responses and rude behavior. Which brings me to yesterday. I noticed a GIANT wasp in my shop...he must have been a left-over from my biggelizing experiment. He was HUGE. Like the wasp in the Doctor Who episode "The Unicorn and the Wasp." Enormous. He was bigger than a puppy. So, I was running around the store with a paper cup, trying to catch him to get him outside. I was starting to get all annoyed and full of myself ("Um DUH, wasp. I opened the window for you, and you're ON THE WINDOW SILL, why don't you fly out? Stupid. Bugs are stupid."). But then, as I was crammed between the hat case and the window, talking to a bug, I saw a man approaching from outside. A man wearing a tie and carrying a folder and a bag and lots of brochures. I watched as he stopped at my door, read the "No Soliciting" sign, rolled his eyes, and walked in. I turned to him and greeted him and he began his sales pitch. I said "Oh, you must not have seen my no soliciting sign." He said, smugly, and rudely "yeah, it's cute." The rest of the story goes like this:

ME: Well, I'm glad you like it, I made it myself. It has a skull on it for a reason."
CUSTOMER WHO HAPPENED TO BE HERE AS WELL: "Um, yeah, read the sign."
SOLICITOR: smirk
WASP: flies full speed from the window sill toward solicitor
SOLICITOR: "Oh my God I'm afraid of bees!" JUMPS backward
WONDERFUL CUSTOMER: "Uh, yeah, well, that's what happens to solicitors here."

The guy ended up not being so bad, and we had a short friendly chat about bugs, and he left. And then I thanked the wasp for doing a great job guarding the store against solicitors. I just knew that he was sent by Nature to protect me, and we became fast friends. We even staged this retro sci-fi movie picture for your enjoyment:

Science and Stuff!

Well hello there, class! Today, I am teaching a lesson called "When Vintage Zazz Meets Science." I don't know what this lesson is about, or what my lecture will mean, but maybe we can find out together.

Tonight, I will assist Professor Gary DeLeo of Lehigh University with a short presentation at Fairview Park in Bethlehem. The presentation about space travel will come before the screening of Planet 51 (click HERE for details), and this is a free event! Come join us, receive a small "party favor" and hang out with your neighbors and a fun movie.

Today's outfit is called "Ode to Bill Nye the Science Guy and Doctor Who and Bow Ties are Cool." This is how I would dress if I were conducting an experiment or riding a space ship or theorizing. I am wearing costume glasses and a bow tie, because in my imagination, this is how all scientists dress when they are in their labs. Note that in one picture, I have conducted a successful "Biggelizing" experiment, in which I have made myself and all the clothing in my shop gigantic, but all the cars in the world and other things stayed the same. I am holding a car and laughing my mad scientist heart out. Take notes. You will be tested later.

Rainbows and Such

Many of you have probably already seen the "Double Rainbow" post on Youtube by "Hungry Bear." It's been flying around for several days, making people happy. If you haven't seen it, it is a video of a double rainbow in the sky, accompanied by the awed, fascinated, and ecstatic commentary of the man recording the image. I am obsessed with the video, and I keep saying things like "that is SO double rainbow." I can't get enough! Please enjoy the links below and become as obsessed as I am.

Today's outfit consists of a vintage full-length slip, a modern-but-retro skirt, a 1950s sheer top, a pink 50s scarf in my hair, and vintage clip-on earrings. It's another day of wearing things over again, but in different ways. Never underestimate the power of creative combination, folks!

I Took A Break, but Now I'm Back

I have been posting a bit sporadically lately. But no more! Prepare yourself for a picture AND some words. Just like old times (a couple days ago).

Today's outfit is called "Layers of Underwear Make Great Dresses." My entire outfit is composed of items that are normally worn underneath clothing. I am wearing a nylon slip as a dress. Underneath are a vintage bed jacket, a silk camisole, and a vintage half-slip (because the top layer of the outfit is rather sheer). I threw on my favorite cinch belt to pull in the waist, rather than let the dress fall free and shapeless. Ta-da! It's an outfit! I am also wearing a pair of my grandmother's clip-on earrings.

Did you know that cats do not make good air conditioners? I found this out recently, and thought I'd pass along the news. Fans and air conditioners help to keep you cool. Cats make you sweaty and furry. FYI.

Little Lisa's Home for Wayward Earwigs

I worked in the garden for a bit today. In my garden, I am growing sage, mint, thyme, parsley, rosemary, onions, broccoli, tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, and earwigs. The earwigs like to hang around inside the lettuce and then they like to hang around on or near me when I pull the lettuce. I recently learned that earwigs may not be as nasty as they look, so I try to be gentle with them. First, I cut the lettuce out of the ground. Then I shake the lettuce to release the numerous earwig communities living within, onto my patio. Then I bring the lettuce into my house, and begin inspecting it and washing it. And then:

Earwigs who are looking for a better place to stay have inevitably stayed hidden within the nooks and crannies of the lettuce. As the water runs into the strainer from the faucet, they get annoyed and run out. Instead of killing the earwigs, I try to catch them all to free them outside. Earwigs are fairly "eeeeeeeeeeeeew" on the "EW" meter, so this is not a task for the faint-hearted or for me. I try to coax them onto whatever I may be holding in my hand. Once they perch on the lettuce leaf/bowl/knife I'm holding, I run toward the porch door, open it, and fling my hand all around until they fall off and I can run back inside. Occasionally, a curious earwig walks off the object in my hand, and onto my actual hand before I get to the door, and I yell "you $%^&^*@& &**!" and shake my hand really hard until he falls off. That's not the nicest thing to say to an earwig, but I get surprised easily. Also, now I feel like I'm crawling with bugs, because I'm thinking about them.

So, the moral of the story is:

It's not nice to kill things or swear at them, but swearing at them is nicer than killing them.

Vintage Magazines Are Amazacrazy

Let's get our daily fashion picture out of the way first. Here it is. Apparently, I am too shiny today, which made every single picture I took blurry, so I just manipulated this photo until it looked less stupid. Enjoy.

Now, on to some pictures from fantastic vintage reading material. I am organizing the shop's kitchenette and craft room today, and I keep getting distracted by all the great old books and magazines that I have here. They range from wonderful bits of history to hilariously disgusting-looking documentation of popular foods from past decades to head-scratching advertising* for the "little lady." Come in some time to check out this collection of wonderment and oddities...you will be pleased with your decision to do so. Here are some teasers, but they're not even the best of the lot. My head explodes with crazy!

Blog Design

I have been trying to redesign the look of this blog, and it's driving me slightly insane. From the difference in appearance on people's monitors and/or different browsers, to my limited understanding of anything I do on a computer, I am seriously contemplating using a telegraph from now on. I might sound like I'm complaining, but I am actually having fun learning and playing with my dear ol' computer. And I'm complaining.

Today's outfit is the same dress I wore in my "Birthday Suit" post, but I have accessorized it to look fancy-shmansy. I also rolled my hair into a nice little retro shape, so I included a black and white photo. For drama.

I have onion breath today. Wanna come see for yourself? I ate a huge and yummy salad, made of things from my garden, including a whole onion. It was delicious, but possibly not a great business move. I am now trying to cover my onion breath with coffee breath. Doesn't this sound enticing? Come visit me!

Happy One Hundred Two (degree) Day!

You know it's hot when you look at the weather report and get excited because it will only be 92 degrees tomorrow.

I dressed in clothing that required little to no fuss today, due to the heat. I put on this adorable nautical vintage scarf (thanks for the cool gift, Mommy-in-Law!) to fancy-up my outfit when I arrived at the shop. As you can see in one of the pictures, I don't think anyone will notice that it absolutely doesn't match anything else I'm wearing. At all. I also thought that I could reserve my energy and stay cool by standing in the same position all day long.

Yesterday, when I was locked in an air conditioned room with my cats, it was still hot and we were getting irritable. Notice the photographic proof that Little Willers was not terribly thrilled by the heat (bottom of this post). WTF stands for "What The Fur." Isn't she CUTE?!?!?!?!!?!! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH, my head explodes every time I look at her!

Happy Hundred (degree) Day!

I have locked myself in my bedroom with the cats and the window air conditioner and I'm not coming out! To keep myself occupied, I have gathered some craft supplies, pens, paper, and my camera. My first project was called "Fashion Creep." The project went like this: I dressed up in an old nightgown, took pictures of myself, then made the pictures look creepy. One of the photos is posted here for your critique.

Acting Lazy is Not Really Something We Do

Hi everyone!

First Friday was fun in the shop last night. Caleigh's Closet was a special guest here in the store, and Caleigh is a super cool lady. We had a great time, and I bought the dress I'm wearing in this post from her collection! Be sure to check out her Facebook page. The earrings I'm wearing today were made by my good friend Janessa. I like to call this outfit "Strawberry Shortcake Goes Shopping" or "The Amazing Fuzzy Poodle Head" or "Nosferatu and Strawberry Shortcake Have a Baby Part II."

Today's post is about more than clothing. It is about the strength and importance of your local business owners. Sharing the store with other vintage sellers and artists for my last few events has been a real treat, and has given me the opportunity to learn more about other people's lives, challenges, and successes. Several interesting conversations that I've had this week have inspired this post. Some of my own standard dumb jokes have also inspired this post. I often like to joke and say that I'm lazy or pretend that on my days off I just spend hours rolling around in a sea of cats. While saying those things is silly and harmless, I was thinking last night that it is important to talk about the work and love that goes into owning and nurturing a business. Sometimes it's important to be serious and tell the truth and not just make jokes about cake and kittens (although, if I couldn't joke about food and critters I'd be a lot less happy).

A friend and I were discussing the difference in price between independent shops and big box stores. I was trying to explain the huge benefit you receive at a locally run business, even if you pay a little more, and I think I was finally able to focus my point:

Aside from personalized customer service and superior product quality, the real benefit you receive from your locally owned businesses is a great place to live. These little gems in your town make your town worth living in. They make your city an interesting and vibrant place to be. They make your home a place to be proud of, so you don't have to say "yeah, my home is boring, so I have to go to [insert city here] for fun." No chain store on Earth can give your hometown a distinct, unique personality. It's the small businesses, run by your neighbors, that ARE your city. That said, running these businesses, although rewarding and fun, is hard work. Every entrepreneur I know pours their heart and soul into every aspect of their job, and lives to make their shop/cafe/salon/restaurant/gallery a better place for people to shop, eat, learn, get gorgeous, meet people, and thrive. Our days on and off are spent figuring out new ways to enhance your experience with us, or plan fun events, or search out products we think you'll love, or improve upon what we have. We do this for ourselves, and for you, and for the community we share. If not for the businesses you know and love, there would be no real city to speak of. The fellow businesses owners I have had the pleasure to get to know over these past few years are fantastic and amaze me every day with their passion and hard work. Handmade and Vintage are Best Friends

Handmade and vintage items go together perfectly. Instinctively, we know that it just makes sense. Vintage clothing has great style, and is given new life with every wear. It's creative and inspiring, and can become a sort of craft for many. Some use the pieces as the basis for new clothing designs, some alter the clothing to update it, and some wear it as-is in assorted fun ways, just because it's wonderful. Handmade items are unique, heartfelt, and often utilize found objects or reuse the "old and forgotten" items in our homes. Vintage and handmade are best friends.

Today's outfit consists of a BEEEEEEAUTIFUL handmade skirt, created by my friend Erica. She also makes gorgeous handbags, and tons of other deliciously lovely items. She makes deliciously edible items, too, like the cake I ate at her house last night! Two pieces! And I brought the rest home with me! Thanks, Erica! Also part of today's ensemble is a vintage t-shirt (funny how 70s t-shirts look just like the t-shirts of oh-ten), my 50s cinch belt, and a delicate lacy scarf from my pal Holly. Holly makes delcious treats as well! I love knowing people who make great food. I love knowing people who are nice. I love knowing food that is nice. By the way, De'ja Brew has spicy homemade pickles today and they are awesome.

Hi Guys!

I am having a great birthday. My mom, sister, and nephews came to visit (awesome), I received chocolates from Chocolate Lab on Main Street and delicious fresh berries from my friend's garden, and then this adorable pink pixie came to the store to hang out with me!

My birthday suit is a beautiful gray dress that I bought earlier this week as a birthday present to myself. Pink Pixie is wearing some sassy beige leather shoes from UnderWired.

UnderWired turned 2 earlier this month, and today, starting at 4:00, you can stop in to celebrate with a glass of wine and a big smiley "hello!" If you stop in before 4:00, you will get a big smiley "hello" and cool clothing, but no wine.

Some things change over time. For example, UnderWired is in a new adorable location now. I am in love with this place! (See photo). Some things don't change as quickly, like my absent-minded behavior. Today, as I walked to the store, I congratulated myself on the low number of bags I was transporting down the road. I was appreciating how light my purse was and how I was able to hold my phone and talk while holding my umbrella, without breaking a sweat. Then I remembered that I was missing something. My camera and all my little gadgets. Oooooooooooh, Lisaaaaaaa...

Enjoy these phone pics. I am sad because you can't see how colorful this outfit really is. That was a little dramatic, I am not actually sad about the photo quality. Mildly annoyed, perhaps. The skirt is purple cotton and the top is a warm cream color with silver, gold, purple, and blue vertical stripes running through the weave.

Today's dress is another that I wear often. A friend commented yesterday that she likes the idea of using the same pieces over again, with different accessories, because it makes sense for the Earth and for budgets. I agree! I am not going to say that I don't enjoy buying clothing for myself (uh, that would be crazy, I own a store). I am saying that I enjoy combining some of my favorite clothing items in new ways rather than getting rid of them and replacing them. When I do buy "new" items for myself, they are vintage 95% of the time.

This particular combination features my lovely green and white floral cotton dress with a pretty vintage slip layered underneath. I added my white cinch belt, and chose simple pearl clip-on earrings today. I am also wearing yesterday's silk scarf in my hair.

Did you guys know that it's one million degrees outside today? I looked on the Weather Channel and the weather guy said "and in this area (waving his hand over PA), it is going to be a sweltering one million degrees today. Wear your sunscreen and carry a bucket of ice water to dump on your head." Using splashes of water as a safeguard against total burning destruction worked for Vin Diesel in the movie The Chronicles of Riddick when he was escaping Crematoria, so it will probably work for humans, too. I use that movie as a reference for most difficult questions and obstacles in my life. Whenever faced with the question "Who is that man?" know that the answer is always: Riddick. Anyone know what I'm talking about? Anyone?

Oh hi there!

Today's outfit is a dress that I wear a lot when it's hot out. I have worn it for these posts several times already, with different accessories. Today, I am wearing a shoe clip as a brooch at the top of the dress, and a vintage silk scarf in my hair. Since I've worn this dress on a few occasions already, I was worried that you'd be bored, so I created three amazing pictures for you, and by amazing, I mean mediocre. The first picture is black and white, and is an attempt to make the dress look like a new dress, since you can't tell what color it is. The second picture illustrates my fondness for hearts, specifically a fondness for holding hearts in my hand. The third picture is my favorite, because it demonstrates my enviable acting skills. I appear to be looking into a compact mirror in this photo, but in fact I'm not. No. The item I am holding in my hand is actually a cigarette case. Really! Yeah, you thought it was a mirror, but that's because I kick ass at acting.

You might be wondering why I am facing in the same direction, with the same expression on my face for each picture. I am wondering the same thing. Note to self: take fewer crappy pictures. Self to note: ok.

This is today's second post. I was having trouble with my scanner, and I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get this photo up in time for Father's Day, so I posted earlier today with a dumb picture of myself. But the scanner is working, so here's my dad! He's a cool dad. Here's a story about him:

Once upon a time, there was a guy named Lisa's Dad. He had a lot of brains and talent, and one day he decided to use his powers to start a family. It has yet to be determined whether this was a choice that served Good or Evil. I called my dad today to interview him. Please read below:

Just Two Chickens in Love

Last night's Etsy Craft Party at the shop was so much fun that I'm still smiling. The Midway's music was phenomenal, the artists in the shop were unique and talented, and the vintage clothing from Emily Caretti of Tea Street Vintage was fabulously stylish. Speaking of Emily, she is a doll and gave me the dress I'm wearing for this post! It is so cute that wearing it is making my face hurt from all the grinning I'm doing! Thank you Emily! Emily's collection will remain in the shop throughout next week, so stop in and try on some ZAZZ! Zazz.

My dress tells a story. The story of two chickens in love:

Once upon a time, a chicken name Pookie was out for a stroll on the farm. He was all "cluck cluck cluck" and then he was like "cluck." Suddenly, the most beautiful chicken he had ever seen appeared on the grass before him. He took one look at her and said "oh cluck." With those romantic words, Pookie won the heart of Snuggles. Together, they formed an alliance that could never be broken, because they were surround and protected by floating red hearts. The hearts shoot lasers at mean people.

An Open Letter to My Camera

Dear Camera,

Please tell me where you hid your charger. This can't possibly be another case of me misplacing an important thing. It's you, I know it. Now I have to take pictures with my phone, and that confuses me because I'm vintage. In my day, we talked on our phones. I don't call people with my camera, so I'd prefer not to take pictures with my phone. Also, I love you. Grr Dangit Smiley Face may not be the best name for a blog post, but it was all I could think of today. I misplaced my dang camera charger, so I took a couple pictures with my phone. Since the pictures are of poor quality, I added high quality artwork to one of them. Notice the beautiful flower in my hair and the mysterious and romantic heart-shaped card in my hand. As you can see, whatever is written inside is making me blush.

I like saying dangit and I like drawing on pictures of my face. Today is shaping up to be a great day.

I wasn't really slacking today, I was doing lots of things! Things like cleaning, talking, eating, and finding more chocolate. Because I was so busy, today's post is late. My outfit is a housecoat that belonged to my grandmother, layered over a peach vintage slip. The silhouette is created by using my blue cinch belt to pull in the waist. I wore a black scarf in my hair because it made me look a little bit like Darth Vader's personal assistant. Photo Fun, Mix/Match Saturday, and a Film Review

I thought yesterday's pictures were boring, so I took a whole bunch today. Funny enough, they were all similar anyway, so I chose selectively. I chose an "I'm leaning on the jewelry case AND looking at something out of the corner of my eye" picture. Taking these pictures is fun and funny, because there is often someone walking past the window outside just as the camera's timer is going off, and when they see me standing in a weird pose, I get all bashful and embarrassed...hence the standard poses every day which, to the random passerby, could look like I'm just standing around, not doing my job.

Today's top was featured HERE and HERE. Its chopped-off sleeves were in THIS post, and the skirt was in THIS post (I look drunk in the picture, check it out). My favorite accessory today is my pretty, pretty ring. It was one of my happiest vintage purchases from many years ago. I love it! And it's a heart! So it loves me back!

In honor of the upcoming SouthSide Film Festival, I am going to end this post with a film review:

This week, I watched (for the second time) "Dead and Breakfast." Hilarious.

More Mix and Match, Plus, I Ran Out of Poses

Hi there. Here are some pictures, as usual, of my outfit. I have run out of photo poses. I used two of my standard poses for this post: "Looking at You Out of the Corner of My Eye Pose," and "Leaning on the Jewelry Case Pose."

Today's outfit is a 1970s polyester white pleated skirt with white cotton full slip. The slip doubles as a cute "camisole" to peak out from my 1950s blue cotton top. I wore the top and my cinch belt HERE as well. I am also wearing some pretty clip-on earrings, and this really super cool vintage brooch.

I have shared wine in the shop with quite a few people today. Would you like to be one of them? Yes, you would.

Magical Mix and Match Marathon

HIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't have any scary stories to tell today, as I remembered my sunscreen, and was not accosted by gnats while walking. I do have another mix and match winter-to-summer outfit to show you, however. I am wearing my vintage black polyester dress with my green 80s top underneath. The dress first appeared HERE (in my very first blog post!), and the top was also worn like THIS. In addition, I wore my vintage pearl clip earrings and a black scarf in my hair so I'd look all olde-timey-like.

I would like to point out that I am really in need of more caffeine. I just stopped typing and started staring at my monitor with what I am assuming was a blank stare on my face. I couldn't remember how I got here. I will give you a glass of wine if you bring me coffee. I have some here, just for you, for reeeeeeeeeeeeeeal!

Scary Stories for a Summer Day

Technically, it's not summer yet, but non-technically, it is. I had a scary morning on my summer's day walk here today. Here's what happened:

I forgot my sunscreen! This is a horrifying thing for me. I have had a few nasty sunburns in my life, one of which made me think my arm was going to fall off and then come back to life as a zombie arm and punch me in the face, so I tremble with fear at the thought of being in direct sunlight for more than 2.5 minutes. Luckily, I had one of my umbrellas with me for shade. However, I was carrying (literally) about 30 pounds of food, supplies, etc., for the store, so trying to balance the umbrella in such a way that I was protected from that giant star in the sky was difficult and, more importantly, funny looking. As I sweated and lurked across the bridge with a sneer on my face, a gnat flew directly into my eyeball at full speed. I'm pretty sure it flew straight through my pupil, and is now in my brain. Maybe that can explain my sudden craving for rotten fruit. On a side note, anyone who tells you that "ladies don't sweat, they perspire" has never met a lady or a human being.

Was that scary for you, too? I'm still shaking.

It's June First, and you know what that means...exactly one month 'til my birthday! Maybe you didn't know that, but now you do, and you are free to start planning what gift you're going to give me. Thanks! Oooooooooooooooooh man I love birthdays!

On to serious matters. Today's outfit is what I am calling my "Manual Labor Outfit." By manual labor, I mean taking pictures for Etsy. So...manual, but not really labor. Anyway! Pants, tank top, vintage clip-on pearl earrings, leopard-print scarf, and a cool vintage leafy-print tie-on belt. The scarf in my hair is protecting the Good People of Bethlehem from what I like to call "The Humidity Monster" or "WereHair." Sometimes, when the humidity, cycle of the moon, and temperature are just right, I develop "WereHair,"capable of destroying entire villages with its massive volume, fangs, and grabbiness. I have an old license picture that I like to keep on hand to show people for proof of the occasional Werehair moment. Usually, when I show the picture to people, I get one of three responses:

1. "Oooooooooooh...um." <--this response is from people who are very sweet and polite and are trying not to laugh because they think it will hurt my feelings. It won't. I know it's funny, and that's why I showed it to you. Please feel free to laugh.

2. Huge laughter. <--a completely acceptable response.

3. "WHY would you show me that? That is terrifying. I hate you now." (also a completely acceptable response.)

Dresses Rock

Yay! Today, Mr. S. and I will be sharing delicious food with some friends, and right now, we're just full of smiles and nice things to say. Like "Gosh, you sure aren't annoying" and "You're one of the least worst people I know."

Today's photos are courtesy of Mr. S., and boy was this a fun photo shoot! We found out all sorts of interesting things, like how to accidentally kill 3/4 of the spinach in your garden (sorry, spinach), and how to keep cool in the heat by wearing pretty cotton dresses. It's easy, just put one on, and - BAM! - you're not nearly as sweaty as you were before (unless you were naked before). Dresses rock in the summer. Let's give dresses a big round of applause! YAAAAAAAAAAAAAY!!!!!!!!!! Today's outfit consists of a modern dress, which I wore in a previous post, vintage faux-pearl clip-on earrings, a vintage cinch belt, my antique locket, and a vintage rayon scarf. Just daaaaaaaaaaaaaahling!

What a beautiful day today! I am having a great weekend, and I hope you are, too. Yesterday, I spent the day at the wedding of my good friends, Janessa and Chris, and today it's just gorgeous out, and I'm all smiley and nice and stuff.

It is a beautiful day, and that means I get to play my favorite game: HIDE FROM THE SUN! A friend described me as "ghostly" yesterday, and that's ok, because I know that I do look sort of like a ghost and also, I can walk through walls, and also, I like to run around with a white sheet on my head saying "oooooooooooooooo." Also, I aspire to live in a dusty old mansion some day.

That said, today's fashion photos include me, an adorable vintage blue and white striped cotton dress with my favorite slip underneath, and an umbrella from my massive umbrella/parasol collection. The sun won't find me as long as I'm under this umbrella! A note about this dress: I am always talking about wearing clothing throughout all the seasons, and this dress was featured in a winter post with a sweater and tights (click HERE), and also earlier this month, with different accessories (click HERE).

Parties, Horror Movies, and Vintage, OH MY!

Hi everyone!

I have some great things lined up for you. On Friday, June 18th, I am hosting an Etsy Craft Party in the shop! This isn't just any craft party...no, sir. The party takes place during the SouthSide Film Festival, and the festival theme is horror, so I am looking for someone to lead a horror-themed craft for the evening. Season 3 of True Blood will be in full swing by then, too, so...vampire sock puppets, maybe? Hee-hee. Anyway, suggestions and volunteers are welcome! In addition to crafts, we will have live music by The Midway - banjos, washboards, amazingness. But wait! There's more! Emily Caretti, my friend and fellow vintage lover, will showcase some of her gorgeous vintage clothing for sale in the shop! For a look at some of her finds, visit her Etsy shop, Tea Street Vintage! I might have a few more tricks up my sleeve, so I'll keep ya posted.

And now for today's outfit - it was inspired by love. As in, I love this dress. Underneath the dress is, of course, a vintage slip. What would I do without my vintage slips? Cry, probably. When I cry, my entire face blows up and turns red and I look like a crazy tomato head. It's terrifying, so don't ever make me cry.

Lava, Fire, Brimstone

This post is brought to you by the letter "H", the words "Hell" and "Hot", and the number 666. When I woke up this morning, it was 666 degrees in my house. I got ready for my walk in, and was pleased to find that it was a bit cooler outside - approximately 650 degrees. I wore my sheer black dress again today, with a vintage cotton white slip underneath, partly because I knew it would be comfortable in the heat. The other reason I wore this outfit is because I knew I'd be carrying a parasol again, and I wanted to look like an Edward Gorey illustration. I know that I succeeded in my task because - and this really happened - someone yelled to me from their car when I was on the bridge and said:

"I thought you were a ghost when I first saw you walking back there! Seriously! Ask my buddy sitting next to me!"

This made my day and I'm not even kidding! Mission accomplished, and congratulations to me!

Craft night was wonderful last night and I'm already looking forward to next Wednesday. I also have a nice surprise lined up for my Etsy Craft Party here on June 18...once I get everything organized, you'll here all about it!

Molten Vintage

Welcome to my imagination.

Inside, you will find pumpkins, ghosts, fall weather, cats, cupcakes, an army of make-believe creatures, knitting supplies, Halloween decorations, paint, sparkles, chocolate, a glass of wine, presents, elves that give out free hugs, and most of all, weather that stays at a moderately cool temperature between 55 and 65 degrees.

Don't get me wrong, I like spring and summer. But I love to complain about the temperature in the winter, so why ignore the hot weather? That would be mean. So here's my complaint - it is sooooooooooo hot out! I melted on my walk in to the store today, and then, as a molten melty blob, I globbed and rolled down the hill and then re-formed into a person-type thing inside the shop. And here's a picture of what I'm wearing! I like this vintage purple sundress and I layered my puffy sleeved black top underneath. Perhaps layers are not a good idea in hot weather, but sometimes a bad idea is the best idea of all. Right? Right.

Things I Learned While Walking in the Sun

Today, I learned some things about walking outside that I thought I should share with you.

1. Walking without a parasol or umbrella in the hot sun made me feel like I was going to explode into a million bubbling bits of lava and flames. Make a note of that, and consider protecting yourself from the sun's life-giving/skin exploding rays with an umbrella this summer.

2. Sweat is designed to evaporate in order to keep us cool and prevent us from overheating. Sweat also feels really gross when it comes out of your armpits and hangs out in your shirt next to your skin. Make a note of this as well and consider giggling next time it happens to you. There's really nothing else you can do.

3. It is important to stay hydrated in the summer months so that you don't suffer from heat-related afflictions and so that you can produce more sweat for your shirt.

4. Sunglasses help to keep the sun out of your eyes and also make you look like you think summer rocks and is the best time of year.

5. Sunscreen really does protect the skin from dangerous exposure to UV rays. Note the photo I present to you today. It was taken without a flash. I'm really this pale.

Today's outfit: Vintage green cotton skirt and plain black t-shirt. Vintage scarf in hair. Flower in hair. Vintage clip-on earrings. Comfort + cuteness + hot weather = "hey, it's ok, everything is fine, because I'm wearing vintage! High five!"

I hope to see many of you tomorrow at craft night (6:30). I'll have a couple surprises to show you, AND there will be lots of great new items in the store!

Fuzzy Hair + Mix and Match = Mischief

Good day to you!

Today, I am wearing my early 80s cotton button-front skirt with a plain cotton black tank top. I tucked the top into my skirt, pulled the skirt way up to my ribs, and then added my retro cinch belt and: Look at that! Everything looks fancy!

I am also wearing my vintage rose necklace and a scarf. I piled my hair on top of my head today so that my curls could get some air, and I like how I kind of look like a fuzzy weird pet thing when I do that.

I am feeling mischievous today. As you can see in the photo, I appear to be saying "maybe I ate them, maybe I didn't." "Them," meaning "people."

Delicious.

Today's Post Barely Mentions Vampires

I am still mentioning vampires just by saying I'm not talking about them today, so, sorry.

Today's outfit is another dress that I've worn several times for these posts, but I am wearing it with different accessories. This 1960s dress has a matching belt, but I substituted my black cinch belt. I also added a black scarf around my neck. If I wear too much pale fabric next to my pale skin, I could disappear, and I don't want that (except for when I'm being sneaky), so I always add a bright or dark accessory. My hair is up in a mass of twists and rolls, and I tied in a white filmy 60s scarf. I added my favorite white flower. Last, but not least, my favorite part of almost every outfit: the vintage slip. This one is a 1950s white cotton full slip. I love how it peeks out from the hem of my dress!

Nosferatu + Strawberry Shortcake = Knives

What will I talk about today? Or Should I say "WOT" will I talk about? If you are a Doctor Who fan, you know that the proper way to pronounce the word "what" is "wot," as in "watt." Example: Last night, I had to stop my car for several minutes in the street because babies were in the street. Playing. And their parents were ignoring them. And I thought "Wot. The heck is going on here?" And the parents were all "oh heeeeeeeeey look at my babies. They're playing in the street it's like, so cool, and my beer is like so delicious" and I was all "WOT." And I made this face:

According to the series Mad Men, in the 1960s, we were missing the basic parts of the brain that alert us to common parenting dangers and we were not quick to shout things like “stop running around with that dry-cleaning bag on your head!”

Now we know better, thanks to the wonders of those helpful illustrations clearly printed on the bags . But now, we are missing even more child rearing brain technology. The technology that tells us to keep our children out of the street because streets are for cars and cars are made of thousands of pounds of steel and kids are made of tens of pounds of fluff. WOT.

Anyway, here's my outfit today. I've worn all these pieces before, and this hairstyle before, but never before has this exact combination happened and illustrated what the child of Nosferatu and Strawberry Shortcake would look like. Apparently, the child of Nosferatu and Strawberry Shortcake would look awesome and would like knives. Vintage black slip to create a sweetheart neckline and lengthen the dress + black cutie dress with cinch belt + vintage lace collar = badass dessert themed vampire lady.

Just Throw a Bunch of Stuff Together

I decided to wear a bunch of stuff today. A bunch of stuff that kind of doesn't make sense together, but I don't care. I love this dress, it's retro inspired with a built-in crinoline (Look how cute! Look!). I wasn't feeling brave enough to walk to the store in a strapless dress, so I wore this sweet-as-pie 50s baby blue shirt underneath. There is no blue in the dress's fabric, so I added a navy blue (50s) cinch belt. Now it sort of looks like it goes together.

Now my hair. First I only had flowers in my hair, but then I added this sheer pink scarf because pink is great and reminds me of strawberry smoothies. Hair smoothies. Now I am all full of myself and think I look like an adorable mismatched crazy person. Awwwwwwww. I feel like hopping around and screaming I LIKE BUNNIES! You know, for comedy.

Party in the Underworld and You're Invited

I am wearing my special blue 1950s dress again today, with my favorite scarf. I walked in carrying my Man's Ruin Parasol, so I looked like a lady at a 4th of July picnic in the 1950s, in Hell. I like that.

Jaime K.'s vegan cooking demo was last night at UnderWired, and boy was she fantastic! Pictured below is Jaime and some of her audience (audience ingredients: 100% awesome ladies) while they receive more samples to enjoy. I am considering cloning Jaime or making a Stepford-style robot of her to keep near me at all times because I must eat more of her cooking! I already warned her that if I hid her in my hair, no one would know. I think I need to stop typing now. I have some planning to do, not about stealing Jaime. Borrowing.

I Smell Like Coconuts

'Tis the season for sun and sunburn, even on a chilly day like this, so I have begun PROJECT SUNSCREEN 2010. The goal is to overload on sunscreen to the point that I am actually paler at the end of the summer. I don't doubt that this is possible, since I'm pretty sure my skin is made of glow sticks. If I achieve my goal, I will be invisible, and will be able to sneak around undetected, and do all kinds of the weird kinds of things I do, but no one will be able to see me. My sunscreen smells like coconuts, so I keep thinking about smoothies.

I wore my pretty vintage black satin slip as a dress today, with my new best friend Lil' Crown Vest. I also wore my grandmother's red rose necklace, and a rose ring. I made this ring, and there are plenty more cool rings in the shop right now. I made them from broken or mismatched vintage parts, and they're only $5 each!

The second picture included in this post is intended to show my hairstyle, and to show how much I love rolling my eyes and gesturing, as if to say "I don't knooooooooooooow. Ummmmmmm. Hahaha I'm stupid." I've had too much coffee today. Twice the caffeine, triple the crazy.

Rainy Day Casual

Heeeeeeeeeeeey Buddies,

I am in sleepy dreamy mode today. Rainy, cool weather makes me want to cuddle up with a book or a movie or a cup of hot chocolate and turn my brain off. You can see that in the picture. See how I'm looking indecisive, like "um, I wanna get up, but maybe I'll stay seated, but maybe I should get up, but I don't remember what I was going to do anyway. I'll just stay right here."

I'll be drawin' some pictures and washin' some vintage clothing and cookin' some food today. To stay comfortable on this quiet afternoon, I wore a cotton pastel plaid top (it was my Gramma's!), a 1960s scarf around my neck, and a modern thrifted sweater and jeans. Dress Like You're 6 Years Old, AND Sci-fi

Today's outfit reminds me of my clothing from childhood. I'm not sure why, because I never owned anything like what I'm wearing as a six-year-old, but it's just a feeling, so I went with it. I really liked rainbows as a child, so the shirt works. And the skirt is from the early 80s, just like six-year-old me is from the early 80s.

I am obsessed with science fiction and time travel and robots lately, so I decided to read some of my vintage sci-fi books. As you can see, I am SHOCKED by what I'm reading. Maybe even HORRIFIED. Did you know that reading makes your brain grow? It's true. Sometimes when I read, my brain grows so much that I have to create bigger and better hairstyles, just to contain all of my brain in the general vicinity of my head. Read something today, and see what happens. Did you know that UnderWired has a good collection of vintage books? Everything from cookbooks to sci-fi to mystery to classics. Sometimes, there are so many books in the store that I have to create bigger and better hairstyles just to store the books in. Really? Really.
